Rainy Days and Mondays
Posted by Shelly under: Shelly Batterbee .
Ok, they don’t always get me down. I admit to liking a good rainy day. I even like to run in the rain. I somehow feel more productive here at home when it rains—maybe because I don’t feel like I should be outside enjoying the sunshine.
I missed reporting in last week—if any of you are keeping track of the Road Warrior progress log. Finally got our kitchen ceiling fixed from when some pipes leading to the upstairs baths burst. Four times. Didn’t freeze. Just burst. Four times. So I left the ceiling like it was for awhile as I wasn’t convinced it wouldn’t happen a fifth time.
Rest assured, however, I did not miss a workout. I got two good 5 mile runs in through the week, plus some bike rides. I’m still having really pesky heel pain – the Jig Jinx, as I’ll call it. I forgot to tape my heel up on Thursday before my run, as well as Friday, so I think I was paying for that by Saturday morning. I could barely put weight on my foot.
One thing injury has done for me—taught me to respect my body and listen to that common sense I may sometimes possess. So I actually rested on Saturday. That was difficult for me—as all week I’d mentally prepared for my 11 mile run to happen on Saturday. Instead I threw caution to the wind and went off the schedule for a day. Instead I got a long workout in on Sunday—I opted to bike my running miles (I’ve read several times that 3 bike miles = 1 run mile)—so I geared up (ha ha!) for a 35 mile bike ride. I’ve never biked that far in one workout, so I wasn’t sure if I could stand it. But I did it—and I still feel good today. I think my heel is grateful to me for not pounding out those 11 miles.
For any of you out there experiencing a few aches and pains this far into your training—hopefully it’s not so bad that you cannot incorporate cross-training into your schedule. I think this year cross-training has made me a stronger runner. Granted, the heel pain makes it difficult to gauge that right now, but I feel stronger on the runs and definitely less tired after. In years past, I might have just taken the day off if I was in as much pain as I had this weekend—and skipped the workout entirely. I now know that I can do something comparable in the meantime so I don’t lose any of the training benefits.
I’d like to give a quick shout out of thanks to Greg Meyer. He met with the Road Warriors a week and a half ago to see how we were doing in our training. I mentioned the pain in my foot, and he showed me how to tape it up—he actually DID tape it up for me, much to the chagrin of Coach Mike, having to sit next to me with my bare foot less than 2 feet away. The taping has definitely helped!!! I hadn’t realized he’d purchased the tape until he was gone and I went to return it to the desk up at Gazelle’s—Chris, one of the employees, said to me—“Well, it’s either your’s or Greg’s—he already paid for it.” Duh! So Greg—I apologize for not realizing you’d purchased the tape and properly thanking you for it. Thanks for taking the time to meet with us, for sharing your sense of humor, and for sharing your stories of the road.

Wow, that’s a bike ride sister! Hope the foot feels better too. What about a foot transplant? I hear they’re pricey, just make sure you get one the same size or you’ll need half of all your shoes replaced. Just a thought.

Hey Shelly. . . hope the foot is better today! I’m teaching with my foot propped up on an icepack! My 3rd graders are so sweet and thoughtful. . . even though it’s April Fool’s Day and I’ve had a few pranks! Oh that Steve! Foot transplant!!! Glad you are crosstraining as well. Look at how it helped Bob come back strong! Heal quickly!!!

Shelly, take it from a seemingly injury prone fellow Road Warrior, keeping forward momentum going - even when it’s not participating in running is better than warming up the couch! See you soon.
