Pre Race Count Down

Posted by Matt Stargardt under: Matt Stargardt .

Two things that I can be assured of in the 15 days before the race.  I will get new aches and pains in weird places and I will start to watch the long range forecast on an hourly basis.

Its always strange to me that I will feel pains as my legs heal from the weeks of heavier work.  Common sense says I should be feeling better.  I also get very conscious about the freak accidents that you have to worry about………For instance…..If I throw out my back now will I have time to heal before the race?  A Dopke style fall right now could take me out at any time…..now matter how well trained I am.   Should I avoid sharp objects for the next 15 days????

The weather is a gamble.  I hate hot muggy weather.  My ideal riverbank temperature  is 50……maybe 55……rain I’m ok with……but not hot tumid air.   So I will watch the forecast hoping for it to be on my side.  I will watch it for the next 15 days.  I will watch it on my computer.  I will watch it on my cell phone.  I’ll check weather on the 8’s on TV.  I might even check the framers almanac.  If I can find a wooly bear caterpillar…I’ll measure its black stripe.   All this even though I know we live in Michigan and the thing will change at least 27 times between now and then.

Storm Team 8 be good to me.

I’m rooting for the same weather forecast, Matt!!! I did my first and only Riverbank in 80+ degrees and high high humidity! Blech! And I can relate to the aches and pains–my leg pain is actually shadowing my heel pain right now–I guess that is good? You’ll do awesome come May 10–see you at the finish line–WAAAAY after YOU get there, but I’ll get there eventually!

I, like all of you, am counting down until the race and cannot believe it is finally only 2 long runs away. I have enjoyed reading your blogs since January. This is my 1st RBR. I am training for the race alone, but never felt like it, because there would always be a blog to read and relate to. I am not sure I could have done alone. So thank you! All of you! Good luck everyone!

I am with you Matt. At this point I am always thinking about what ifs. What if the weather is bad, What if I hurt my ankle at work while wearing workboots, and the always where did that pain come from. But it all works out in the end and come race time I am ready more than ever.

I’m with you Matt, heat and humidity suck the life out of me! I’d rather run when it’s 5 and dry than when it’s hot and sticky. On the other hand, that 40 degree hard rain O’Brien run was horrible…Glad to hear you’re reading the blogs Korie, find us at the end and say hi! Almost there!

I do that same weather thing Matt! And aren’t we all so paronoid about injury!? Thank you Korie for your nice comments. I think we all wonder whether people actually read the blogs. It’s so nice to hear that they have helped you. It is a very tough thing to train alone. I really admire you for your perseverence! Good luck on May10th!
