Pain and Warning
Posted by Bob Estes under: Bob Estes .
I thought I would take some time to reinforce Mike’s comments from view of the injured. I will be out of training for a little while. I wish I knew for how long. I thought I had “tweaked” my old back injury. It seems as if I have actually made an old injury worse. I cannot say for sure that it’s because I was training too hard. I cannot say I am broken today due to running through the pain of various afflictions because this may have happened all on it’s own without warning. I can say that I was warned not to keep going at the rate I was pushing myself and now, I know why. When I felt the pain in my lower back Thursday night. I should have stopped. I did not.
Take it from an experienced source that had asked advice but failed to heed it. Pay attention to pain. Do not push through to prove a point to yourself or anyone else. We are here to start and finish this race. We are not here to work so hard the wheels come off before the race is run.
I have had two days and nights of excruciating pain to ponder my mistake. I had never personally experienced sciatica previous to early Friday morning. Now I question what it’s going to take to come back from this and run with any intensity. This seems a natural thought, as currently I cannot walk normally (pimp strut) due to numbness and loss of strength my left leg. Apparently, I have inflamed the longest nerve in the human body by way of a pinch in my “tweaked” lower back. I have no choices now but to slow down.
On the positive side: My cold symptoms are improving due to the rest and I have felt some improvement with the leg pain through last night and today. I go back to my chiropractor tomorrow morning. He has assured me that this little problem of mine will get better (if I allow it to.) I am not very good working open-ended schedules. Unfortunately, training and now rehabilitation are open-ended schedules. This will be the new trick that this old dog needs to learn.
Have a safe and happy New Year! God Bless!

You are doing so awesome, Bob. You’ll be back out there tearing it up in no time. (Just be sure to cover up those calves -OH! LOL)

Oh, Bob, I’m so sorry to hear you will be on a mandatory rest for a bit–PLEASE listen to your BODY and to your doctor and to your fellow road warriors–REST. Sometimes it’s hard to listen to the body and easier to listen to the little voice in the back of the head saying “push through it!” but it’s not worth it. I didn’t learn the first year of injury, so I had to experience another injury w/ a longer recovery time last year. We will still be here for you when you are back on the road! In the meantime, I hope you can work in some awesome massages to work through it! Lol! If you can do the bike before running, let me know–I’ll come down to the Y and bike next to you. I’m learning to like it *almost* as much as running now!

Bob, I’m sorry to hear this, but remember, you may be down but you’re a long way from out.
Over the past two months you have run hard and you are ahead of the game. Take this time to rest and heal. And when you come back just take it easy until you are fully ready to push it again.
Now I have to take some of my own advice. My calf has been bothering me for a few months now. Monday in the race I pulled it again but ran thru it because it hurt just as much to walk as it did to run. Needless to say Jana beat me this time. Being hurt I was unable to hold her off.
So I think I’m going to take this week off and heal up before the real training starts.
Good luck to you my friend, heal-up and come back strong.

Stay strong Bob and be patient. You will be better for the rest. Looking forward to running with you again very soon!

Bob,
I am sorry to hear that you are injured. I know its hard to back off. I know I am not good at it either. I have every confidence in your ability to rest heal, and come back stronger.
