No Training YET!

Posted by Bob Estes under: Bob Estes .

This is the update from the down but not out. Anticipation of being able to run soon continues to build. I see runner everywhere I go. I am currently on injured reserve. I am the guy who shows up at the YMCA on Thursday and lurks in the back whilst Mike and Terry show everyone some warm up routines only to make a hasty retreat to the locker room when the real running started. I put in my 30 minutes on the arc trainer! As if that were a substitute for speed work or any kind of running.

I have recently gone to sleep and dreamt of running (pain free). Not unlike having to give up my vegetarian diet a few years ago after dreaming about bacon, I have to make sure that I don’t forgo this healing process in order to appease my need for the feeling of personal accomplishment that comes with racking up weekly training miles.

I would say that sitting on the side lines under mandatory rest due to the angry sciatic nerve in my left leg and foot is one of the hardest things I have had to do since loosing weight and regaining some physical conditioning. It’s hard for me on this very warm (for January) Sunday not to trade the 2 plus mile walk with the dog in for a run round Reeds Lake. OK, it really would be hard if my left leg were actually working correctly.

The virtue of Patience is an asset I am currently low on. Until I complete this phase of healing I will continue the need to find ways of exercise that don’t hurt and hopefully hold off the frustration that comes with injury. I cannot wait to use the Forerunner GPS watch I got from Santa to track the mileage of a run instead of a walk. I am sure this will all be forgotten when I am healthy again. In the mean time, I am sure to drive my wife crazy due to my whining! Is that bacon I smell?

Congratulations to those of you out there already setting personal bests in training and endurance. Until I am able to join all of you with a proper stride – Happy trails!

Thinking of you and praying for your quick return Bob. Be patient. I know where you are. I have been there. I know the frustration you are feeling. It’s early . . . . you have plenty of time before the race and lots of alternatives for keeping your cardio up. Hang in there Bob!

Bob–if ever you want to do a slow walk with some road warriors, I will do that with you! Meet us an hour after our Sunday runs and I will happily stick around for a slow walk if you are up to it so we can keep you in the loop! (yes, I said an hour–I cannot guarantee I can do those miles any faster w/ the icy paths like we had yesterday! I AM FINE WITH MY SLOW PACE!) :) And yes–the arc, elliptical, or bike are great ways to keep in good shape for when you can get into the running again–don’t beat yourself up for that! We are all waiting for your healthy return!

Deb’s right — you have plenty of time before the race. I think you’re doing great. Most people would toss in the towel until they felt better, but by keeping up the cardio, you’re doing yourself many, many favors in the long run!!

Hang in there Bob! You have PLENTY of time to train….and Shelly’s right - yesterday I walked around Reeds Lake after the training lap and it was awesome. Feel free to join us for a walk around the lake @ 2:00PM, Sunday’s.
Best wishes to you for a fast recovery.

You are so like me last year its not even funny:) I remember having to use the elliptical and arc trainer when my knee swelled up and started clicking. I was very grumpy those weeks. Hang in there. You are doing exactly what you need to do to have a successful run

Keep up the Cardio, You’ll be back soon. Even though you can’t do some of the training, your presence is motivaiting. It says something about you. You are not only there for yourself but for your fellow Road Warriors. That’s a statement in itself.
Terry

Thanks everyone. I look forward to some hard core walking! I have issues trying to ride the stationary bike as well. I am really happy that everyone else is powering through the beginning of training. Except Chaz. I know he’s probably getting inpatient as well.

Hang in there Bob! Patience is a virtue — you have it and the run will be SO sweet when you are well again!

We can’t retreat into a nontechnological Eden which never existed…It is only by the rational use of technology, to control and guide what technology is doing, that we can keep any hopes of a social life more desireable than our own: or in fact of a social life which is not appalling to imagine.
