Mental Blocks

Posted by Terrence York under: Terrence York (Coach) .

Last saturday we met at riverside park to run a 16 mile long run.  We started at a nice and easy pace for the first 30 minutes and then picked up the pace for an hour.  I felt pretty good until about the 8 mile mark when we turned around and started to head back to riverside park.  I passed Darrin as he was heading to the 8 mile mark and I said I’ll wait for him down the trail. As I got closer to the Belmont parking lot I had to use the porta pod.  After that was done I saw Darrin at the water cooler.  We continued to run a faster pace for about 25 more minutes.  Then we slowed our pace down.  I told Darrin that at the 15.5 mile marker I was going to walk for a few minutes.  I just was having a mental block and needed to walk .  I looked down at my garmin and realized that I just ran 15.5 miles under 2 hours.  This is one of my goals for race day.  I know time doesn’t stop on race day for water stops, bathroom breaks and whatever else may slow me down.

I was thinking alot about my mom that morning and I think that prevented me from running the full distance.  Since then I have told myself that she would of want me to do better and not stop.  Just keep running.  I know running 12 miles on Sunday with  a couple of the road warriors and doing a speed workout Tuesday at the YMCA has helped my clear my mind. Running is such great therapy.  From now on I will not let any mental blocks prevent me from finishing any runs.

Terry–AWESOME job on your training run in that short of a time! You are doing a great job–I know this year has brought some unexpected events for you, but you are serving as an awesome role model to the rest of us. Keep it up, Coach!

Way to go on getting it done under two hours. I can’t imagine the thoughts that run through your mind on your runs, but I think you’re doing an awesome job! You’re so much fun to run with!

Thanks for being out there with us Terry. It’s really made a huge difference with me to have the encouragement and thumbs up even if in passing!
