Love and support

Posted by Deborah Pieri under: Deborah Pieri .

Hopefully everyone had a wonderful Christmas. We had five days in a row of parties. . . two big ones at our house. It was a great time, but exhausting as well. We had all six kids home, along with boyfriends and girlfriends. That’s my greatest joy. . . . to have them all here and to see the love they have for each other and for us.

For so many years I think our kids thought that Tim and I were crazy with our running routine. Actually they did because they would make comments about how weird their parents were to be running at 5 in the morning and 10 miles or more every Saturday. I remember one particularly grueling long run this past summer. It was 90 degrees and so humid. We walked in the door moaning and groaning as we tossed down huge glasses of water. Our 19 year old son Sam, with the very dry sense of humor, stared at us and said, ”Aren’t you guys kind of old to be doing this?” I shot him a look, and said, “At least we’re doing it. Takes balls to run in this heat.” “That it does!”, said Sam. Slowly over the years there is a sort of respect and acceptance. Running is just part of who we are. By the way Sam runs now as well.

Christmas morning as Tim and I, and our dog, Willowbee were just arriving home from our run, our oldest son, Nick and our youngest son, Joe were just walking out the door to go on their run. Joe is a freshman in high school and runs cross country, and Nick is a swimmer who has been running more and more. I couldn’t help but smile as the two of them took off together. What a wonderful bonding experience for brothers. They looked so darn cute that I had Tim run in and get the camera to take a picture of them.

Later in the day, Nick handed me a large present. It was heavy. I slowly unwrapped it, revealing a beautiful handmade wooden box, lined in cedar. On the lid of the box was carved “Road Warrior.” I felt tears in my eyes. I was overwhelmed. Nick had made this box for me and dragged through airports from Boston. He knows how excited I am to be a part of the road warrior team. It was his way supporting me in this wonderful adventure we’re on.

Nick left on Wednesday, flying to Italy to travel with a friend for a few weeks, and then back to Boston. As Tim and I were running this morning I thought about how Nick and Molly would be going on some wonderful runs in Italy.

Anyway, blessings to you and yours and Happy New Year! I am attaching a picture of Nick and I and the Road Warrior box.

Happy running, Deb

Sounds like you have a wonderful family Deb!! I’m cherishing the days when my kids are little, but am looking forward to see the adults that they will turn into! Hopefully see you this weekend!
