Into the new year
Posted by Matt Stargardt under: Matt Stargardt .
5:30 am the alarm goes off. I decide I am staying in bed….because I can. I don’t need to run. There’s no way the teacher I run with at 6:00 is going to show the first day back. I had two good weekend runs. I deserve some rest. I reset my alarm for 6:30….1 more hour of sleep. By 5:35 I’m wrestling with my conscious. I DON’T NEED TO RUN. I know if I make one move off the bed, Newton (the Dog) will be jingling after me thinking the morning routine has begun, which he knows begins with his food bowl. If he barks he will wake the boy, and then the whole house will be up. 5:40……If I can just get back to sleep…5:45 I’m wide awake. My brain has pulled the trump card. I can skip the run but sleep is not going to happen. 5:50 I’m feeding the dog and lacing up my shoes and head into the fog.
So you may ask how is 2008 different from 2007. So far two rest days. I will do better.
My latest challenge is to think of what to do next? This is my current thought. I have a lot of goals that revolve around me….riverbank, road warrior’s, probably bayshore and a bunch of tri’s in the summer. But for 2008 I wanted something that was more of an investment in my family. So I have decided my quest for 2008 is to complete one activity outside with a mammal who is a member of my family every day for 2008…….Humans are preferred, but this way the dog will count. In a pinch I could buy a family mouse and take him for a bike ride to keep the streak alive….2007 taught me to include loopholes in any future goals. Any activity will count as long as its outside.
Hopefully, later in life when the ozone layer is gone, and we’re celebrating another 100 degree Christmas on the dunes that were once the straits of Mackinac, my family will appreciate their Don Quixotian father’s attempt to drag the family outside.
