Growing up right here in Grand Rapids during the 70’s and 80’s I heard these words around this time every year on Radio and TV ads. The Riverbank Run used to use this little jingle originally done by The Dave Clark Five and I can’t get these lyrics out of my head. For the first time in my life I am not just going to be living around the race but smack dab in the middle of it.
Right now, the biggest thing I am worried about is how I will wipe the cheese-eating grin from my face after I cross the finish line Saturday Morning. I am looking forward to seeing friends and family running on Saturday and I am looking forward to the spectators. Please do yell with all of your might!

Last year, some radio station set up speakers midway through the course. The song that was playing when I ran by was “Mickey.” Of course, I changed it to “Nicky,” as in “Hey, Nicky, you’re so fine. You’re so fine you blow my mind. Hey, Nicky! Hey, Nicky!” That carried me through a couple of miles. Sounds corny now. But it was working then!

The scary thing–five years ago that was the SAME song that station was playing at that SAME point on the course…I wonder if it’s the only song they have…and that lets you know if you are going too flippin’ slow if you hear it AGAIN…
