Group run this Saturday!

Posted by Mike Dopke under: Mike Dopke (Coach) .

This Saturday March 1st there is another public training run for the 5/3 Riverbank run. The run leaves from the downtown YMCA at 8:00 a.m. There will be several distances available from beginner to expert. This is a RunGazelle run and will be fully supported with water, Gatorade, and GU. You do not need to be a member of RunGazelle or the YMCA for this run. Please feel free to join us and tell your friends. This will be a great opportunity to run with a group and ask advice from coaches.

Last week was rough on me. If you are a regular reader of this blog then you know that I have a broken wrist from a cross training accident. The doctor has put me on a 2-week suspension from running while the bone begins to heal. This has been extremely difficult as I am training for both Riverbank and the Bayshore Marathon in May. I have been authorized to spin and ride the elliptical. I have for the most part been a good boy. I do have to admit that I “jogged” 2 miles Tuesday night to cool down after 1 hour and 15 minutes on the bike. Please don’t tell anyone.

Tonight I plan to do 1 hour and 30 minutes on a stationary bike. It is not the same as running but I am trying to do all I can to not to lose fitness over this 2-week period. I figure if I can keep up a cardio activity for close to the duration of my long run, maybe I won’t be too far behind next week when I can resume running. It will be interesting to see how this affects me. Saturday I will be missing an 18-mile run with my training partners so will do about 2 hours worth of cross training. Needless to say I am very much looking forward to getting my cast changed next week.

You’ll probably come back from this running better than ever. Sometimes a “rest” can do that to the body. Now, tell me how to recover from 5 days of complete lethargy with the flu so I can convince myself I haven’t lost out on any fitness levels by doing no more than laying on the couch…
