Going for the G(old)

Posted by Bob Estes under: Bob Estes .

I signed up to be a Road Warrior and often I doubt that title is appropriate for me. Saturday morning, all runners that braved the lower than normal temperatures and soaking rain were Road Warriors.

I used to think that my Grand Father was a bit over the top when he said he walked 3 miles of country roads up hills both ways to get to and from school each day (in cardboard shoes.) Well, I’ll have a good story to tell my grand kids someday!

Kids, let Grandpa tell you how we used to do it;  We’d RUN 5 miles up too many hills to count in one direction just to run round a lake and then RUN 5 miles of those same hills in really wet (but somewhat expensive Brooks running shoes) just to say we did it! Yup! That’s how we rolled! I’m sure that last statement will be pretty stale by the time I have grand kids to say it to. I feel old.

At any rate, that was my Saturday morning. By the time the run was complete I was ready for a fresh diaper, a wheel chair, and some Bengay. Where’s that nurse when you need something round here! By Sunday morning I was in some mild to moderate discomfort and was considering a trip down Feel-sorry-4-me Lane when I opted instead to join some of my fellow Road Warriors to run round ole Reeds Lake. Stellar plan! The last mile that I ran was more of a quick limping shuffle. Now I’m looking AND feeling good.

I need some good pain meds and probably some consoling. I’m still looking for that nurse!

In the end, I’m glad I did it. Now it’s over and I can go lay down. Hope your training runs this past weekend started and - or ended well!

Bob
I know you need meds and a nurse and probably a massage, but all that soreness and discomfort feels good in a way, doesn’t it? You worked your butt off, man! I mean, it sure beats sitting around Sunday evening feeling disappointed that you didn’t rack up any miles this weekend. A little bit of soreness is your body’s way of saying: You done good!

Bob–you’re doing an awesome job! Just think– a couple of months ago you weren’t sure if you’d be lining up at the start with us! Keep up the great work!!!

LOL…I felt the same way after Saturday’s run, but I could never put it as eloquently as you.

The title “road warrior” is absolutely appropriate for you Bob. Your determination and strength inspire us all. Good for you for pushing hard when you didn’t feel like it. It only makes you a more powerful warrior!!!
