Frustration
Posted by Kristin Linscott under: Kristin Linscott .
Okay, my last blog entry entitled “Off and Running in 2008″…yeah, not so much.
Last week Thursday I met up with everyone at the Y for our team training. Needless to say, I felt AMAZING after the workout and I left feeling like I had started off strong with my January training. Other than my strange side cramp that really wasn’t on the ’side’, I felt great - I WILL be drinking more water prior to my runs from now on! It was so much fun running with everyone and getting that extra push from Coach Mike and Coach Terry. It makes it so much easier when you have that encouragement running there beside you!
So anyways, I got home, feeling great. I had been trying to ‘not claim’ what I felt was the beginning of a cold that week. I even went to the Med Center on Tuesday morning to get checked out because I could just feel it starting to fester in my body - it always starts with the sore throat. The doctor gave me the ‘you just have a virus’ talk and sent me away with what was probably sugar pills to just get me out of the office. So in my mind I was totally hyped up because I figured I had dodged the bug that was trying to take over. As said before, not so much.
I woke up Friday feeling like total crap. I managed to push through work but when I got home I crashed. I thought I was totally out of the woods after Thursday’s workout…that damn bug sucked me right back in.
I didn’t get out of bed all weekend. Boring. I ate so much chicken soup that I swear I started growing feathers. Went through a few boxes of Puffs Plus - thanks to my wonderful parents who brought me a box, as well as oranges, soup and a vaporizer. My tounge was stained permanently red from all the Halls Cough Drops. All I could think about was that Mucinex commercial with the little green goober guys living inside my head - gross.
My intent was to run Reeds Lake on Sunday, but I didn’t want to prolong this nasty funk. I felt so frustrated and mad at myself…especially after being on such a high and in a great mood on Thursday.
I’m feeling better now, but I can’t get out of my mind that I feel like I’m letting myself and my team down by not ’sucking it up’, as I like to tell the girls on the cheer team that I coach. I guess we all have our set backs…but this time around I’m feeling the pressure of holding myself more accountable. I know you can’t control getting sick, injured, etc. But that doesn’t change the way you feel inside. I guess it’s a good thing to feel this way. If you didn’t worry, it would mean that you didn’t care.
So I’m back on track heading into the weekend. My girls have a big competition in Gull Lake this Saturday, so I won’t be able to make the Reeds Lake run since it was switched…I’m bummed! :( The only thing lingering is an annoying tickle in my throat that occasionally causes a coughing spell. My co-worker told me to rub Vicks on my feet and put socks on before I go to bed tonight. It’s worth a try…I’ve been waking myself up coughing all week!
I’ll let you know if it works.

Hey Kristin–don’t beat yourself up about this!!! We all get sick–and you are doing your body a favor by just letting it rest instead of pushing it. Pushing it only prolongs whatever sickness you have. Plus, if you’d shown up at Reeds Lake all sick and coughing up the lovely mucous, we would have tried to run away from you.
And we all know by this point I’m not that fast, so then *I’d* be sick now and really mad at you.
Kidding! I hope you are feeling better–we’re still all here for you! Hope your cheer competition goes great this weekend!

Oh, and if you’ve never tried Airborne–that stuff works great to fend off colds if you use it in the beginning of one. I actually use one occasionally even when I’m feeling good and make it as a hot tea to try to keep things away. Not good for flus, necessarily, but for the icky cold it works great!

Kristin, take it easy now and you’ll be better for the long haul. It seems as if everyone gets this bug lately. Be ware, I felt this nasty head cold improve and thought I was out of the woods only to get a second nasty bout with lung butter as a bonus! I know the frustration you mentioned first hand. Hang in there.

Uh oh, that sounds a little too familiar. I had 2 laborous runs yesterday that were much slower than the effort I was putting into them. My lungs felt heavy and this morning I woke up with a sore throat. I am popping an airborne right now as I type on Shelly’s advice. This crap has been all around me for the past 2 weeks and I thought I missed it by having the flu.

I hope you are feeling better today. I bet you won’t be eating chicken soup for awhile.

I agree with everyone above. You were listening to you body and gave it the needed rest so that it could use any extra energy to heal itself and give an eviction notice to the green goober guys.
Oh, and no more talk about “letting people down”. We’re not even two weeks into the month of January. More talk like that, and I’m going to smack ya in the back of the head around the track during our Y runs. ![]()

I too, struggled with that awful virus. . . . 3 1/2 weeks of it. Rest. You’ll be stronger for it. I also found honey great for the cough. I put it in tea. You’re doing great Kristin. We’re all sending lots of positive energy your way!
