Dodged A Buick
Posted by Steve Kelly under: Steve Kelly .
I actually don’t know what kink of car it was, but I almost got dusted Sunday with the Road Warriors in East! Terry, Julie and I were taking our second loop around a track Mike laid out for us. I was a few paces ahead going down the Hall street hill. Out of no where some NASCAR wanna be came up the hill hugging the side we were on. I just got in the woods in time, giving my right knee a good tweak in the process. By the time I looked back he was over the center line, over correcting. Thank God no one was driving down the hill in the opposite direction. Close call, but we’re still standing.
I’ve been thinking of some of the close calls and strange events of my recent running career since. I’ve been honked, whistled and yelled at many a time. I had my daughter on her bike for a run and was chased down by a rather grouchy German Shepard. Think of all the bees, deer flies and other pesky creatures you’ve battled over the years. I guess sometimes a little adversity mixes things up! A group of us once got plowed (the snow type!) on a Run Gazelle Saturday run. I’ve been dive bombed by birds, strafed by bikes and pulled over for directions. That guy, by the way, gave me running advice once the directions were given. I’ll never forget him saying, “Move your arms around more!” I’ve huddled on people’s porches I don’t know waiting out thunderstorms. Anyone realize once your outfit got wet it was see through? Ever have a run longer because you got lost? Guilty. Last week I fought a lower GI thing that turned out to be the classic battle between good and evil. Good ruled the day that time my friends. Just barely. Through it all we keep running.
I think we ran 12.5-13 miles and outside of a few sprinkles it was very mild. I’m getting creative with running gear these sweet days when it’s not 5 degrees and snowing. Weird to wear a hat with shorts, but this time of the year warrants it sometimes. I’ve gone to the late training shaved head, it makes me much faster to be sure. It’ll look much better too when my skin isn’t so gray!
Keep at it friends, just a few weeks to go…

Holy crap! Sorry to have missed that Buick. Surprised the “GI” problem didn’t all of a sudden present itself while trying to get out of the way. Hope your knee is not seriously hurt. I am going tonight to get one of those wind resistant go-faster hair cuts!

Hmmm…I wonder if it was the same yahooligan who nearly ran ME down back in January… Hope your knee is ok, Steve. And, um, unlike Bob, I’m not really ready to make progress in my time by shaving my head. I’m SURE you’ve just shaved off (ha!) at least 20 seconds per mile though!

Yes, through it all we keep running Steve! I’ve had those kind of crazy adventures too. Funny how we find out the hard way that some running clothes are see-through when wet! Watch that knee. . .I think you tweaked a knee that day we were running in Ada too!

Did a quick four miler today and the knee felt great! It was pretty sore yesterday so I took the day off. Much better after a little Motrin and a day to rest. I might need a brace or duct tape or something…
