Confessions … Part 1??
Posted by Julie Hurley under: Julie Hurley .
I’ve decided to number my Confessions; knowing my procrastinating self, there’s bound to be more than just one.
So……..I might just come right out and say it: I haven’t run in eight days.
EIGHT DAYS! Are you kidding me!?! I have 15.5 miles to run in May! I’m starting to feel squishy and the waistband in my pants is giving my claustrophobia.
I have an entire list of reasons (i.e., excuses) why I haven’t been out there, working my butt off. I need to list them here, to see how lame they really are:
Holidays
Laundry
Flu (36-hour bug ponged its way around our house, affecting all four of us)
Work
Weather (Winter Warnings are always scary to me)
Ok, so for two days there, I was feeling pretty crappy with a nasty stomach bug. Plus, taking care of two kids (+ one husband) who have the bug is fairly concerning and time-consuming as well. But, I committed myself to this goal and I’m determined to follow through.
I certainly look like a runner - I was given some pretty awesome running gear as gifts. But it took me two whole days to suit up with the intention of soiling them with some hard-earned sweat. I FINALLY ran outside this evening, just before darkness fell. I ran just over 2.5 miles and felt really good.
I stumbled upon something called ChiRunning when I just started running this past spring. I had asked for a DVD instructional video, the ChiRunning book and a metronome for Christmas. I tried to incorporate a couple of what they call ”form focuses” into my running tonight and felt a fleeting moment of what I consider “ChiRunning” and felt really good. ChiRunning is supposed to teach you a proper form so that you can run injury-free and more efficiently. I’ve introduced it to a few people I know. I don’t know much about running without injury - I’m just too new to the sport- but from what I’ve read it makes total sense to me.
I’m going to try and meet up with RunGazelle on Saturday, the 29th. It’s my 30th birthday that day, and I have a few festivities planned: a long-anticipated massage from Natural Choice Chiropractic and a wine tasting to finish off the evening. I can’t wait!!
I just signed up for the Resolution Run for the 31st! This will be my first race in a new age category. It doesn’t feel weird yet to think that I’ll be 30 in just a couple of days, but I know it will hit me in some random way really soon.
Signing off for now…

Wow Julie! That’s awesome that you are reading “Chi Running.” I was doing some cleaning today and stumbled on my copy that I started reading 3 years ago and never finished! You’ve inspired me to pick it up and finish it! I also found another book that my son, Nick gave me for my birthday 4 years ago called “Running the Spiritual Path: A Runner’s Guide to breathing, Meditating, and Exploring the Prayerful Dimension of the Sport.” It’s also a very wonderful and centering book!
I’m thinking about signing up for the Resolution Run with you and Shirl!

I’ve had friends read the Chi book, as well–they have liked it. I have yet to read it–I’m still on the heart rate training books I bought and friends have loaned out–I’ll read whatever gives me great ideas on staying injury-free this time–so I guess if Chi is working for others, I should give that a shot!
And I won’t go looking to drive in these crazy snowstorms but if ever you want to run in them with me–let me know! I even have an extra reflective jacket I can let you use!
And a polar Buff–great for keeping the head warm!

Run with us, Deb!! That way you can indulge in an extra cocktail at your New Year’s party without guilt.
Shelly … definitely read ChiRunning. It’s good stuff. Even if you incorporate a couple of their tips (correct posture/head alignment) you’ll feel better.

But why, some say, the moon? Why choose this as our goal? And they may well ask, why climb the highest mountain? Why, 35 years ago, fly the Atlantic? Why does Rice play Texas? We choose to go to the moon. We choose to go to the moon in this decade, and to do the other things, not because they are easy but because they are hard.
