Come run with us!

Posted by Mike Dopke under: Mike Dopke (Coach) .

Hey are you looking for a chance to try RunGazelle for free and run with a bunch of cool people? Come to the downtown YMCA this Saturday at 8:00 a.m. You do not have to be a member of RunGazelle or the YMCA to get in. This is a public run and will be leaving the Y at 8:00 a.m. and running part of the River Bank course. There will be various distances available and I would imagine there would be about 75-100 people of all different ability levels there. Don’t be afraid to come down and give us a try.

I’m tired today. Just thought I’d put that out there. I am starting to ramp the miles back up but until last week I hadn’t run more than 40 miles in 1 week since October. I have been holding at about 30-35 miles a week since early December for maintenance. Now that it is almost February and I am running both Riverbank, and the Bayshore Marathon in May, it is time to increase. Last week I ended up with 41.5 miles and I hope to do at least that again this week.

Sunday morning I ran the Frostbite Marathon Relay, which added an extra long run to the week. It was out in Holland and I highly recommend you get a team together for next year. This was a very informal race but was a lot of fun. The only prize awarded in the race is for the best team baton. This year I believe it was taken by a pink thong with a GU holder on each side and a sleeve for an Ipod. There were many other fun batons as well. My personal favorite was the pair of shorts with the fake butt sewn to the outside to make it look like you were mooning people as you ran. Classic. After the race we were treated to all the chili we could eat at the Currah (I think I spelled it right) Irish pub.

I ran the last 2 legs of the race, which were together a total of 11.5 miles. This was after the slippery 10 miler we did on Saturday morning with RunGazelle so it was more of a tempo run for me. I guess it’s no wonder why I’m tired. The first of my 2 legs of the race was on a snow-covered road so I had an opportunity to try out my new YakTrax. There was a definite increase in traction with these so I recommend you try them if you are training outdoors during these winter months. The second leg of the race was on a snow-cleared and busy road so I took them off for that. The main battle on that leg was trying to avoid flying slush from passing cars. Although most cars gave us a wide berth, I do believe that some drivers in Holland find great joy in splashing runners who happen to be on “their” road.

Mike - I’d like to come to the Y this Saturday, but don’t know if there will be a distance for me… I just signed up for the Riverbank (1st timer) and need to really get going in order to complete it and not collapse into a quivering ball of goo at the finish line (or someplace LESS than the finish line). Would a 3 or 4 mile run be a possibility on Saturday?

Yes Dan, I do believe that there will be shorter distances available. You should have plenty of beginners to run with. Enjoy your training and congratulations on signing up for your first Riverbank!
