Boogers and Backaches

Posted by Bob Estes under: Bob Estes .

We have officially hit the dog days of winter where negative attitudes, aches and pains are intensified by the cold mornings coupled with the strong urge to move to Aruba. I have had the misfortune of being injured just before the New Year and have not run outside since. That hasn’t stopped me from complaining about the weather.Saturday Morning started for me like many other mornings. The day started to the sound of that nasty alarm barking at me to raise my weary head off the pillow. I obliged only enough to reach across and press the snooze. This happened three or four times before common sense kicked in and I told myself what I always tell myself to get moving in the early morn. Those extra 9 minutes of sleep between now and when the alarm goes off once more is really not doing me any good. It’s time to get up – which I did. Physically anyway. Mentally I slept even though I was once again vertical.

I got up, brushed my teeth and gathered all my gear. Grabbed something to eat along with some coffee, water, vitamins etc. and went out to my cold car. I was tired. I was really tired. It had been a long week. I had that three-day stubble and really bad hair. Also present was the all too common post nasal drip and a nose full of those post-rhino virus artifacts (better known as boogers) along with a stiff sore back. Take it from a pro, snot rockets can really aggravate a sore back! Needless to say, I was feeling exceptionally uninspired and unappreciative of the cold weather. OK, what I mean to say here is WINTER SUCKS and I am SOOOOOOOOOO over it!

Now, I’m not really into walking around with that serial killer look but, sometimes, you just can’t shake it. I arrived at the Y, changed and headed up to the track to try walking off the attitude before beating it out of myself with the arc trainer when I encountered a mood changer . Two of my fellow R.W. teammates (Shirl and Shelly) were waiving and smiling at me from their treadmills.Sometimes the only reward to dragging your butt out to train or workout is a smile and chat from that friendly someone who may have been suffering the same as you.

A special thanks to my fellow Road Warriors for making my Saturday morning much better than it could have. In the end, I got to see Coach Mike and Julie too. Five Road Warriors in the same location. I should’ve brought a camera! Either I really miss the group runs or I need to get out more!

It seems as if we are all in need of some good inspiration. Take heart in the fact that there are kindred spirits out there attempting to make it through the next workout. Smile at your fellow runner or the person on the track or machine next to you and just maybe it’ll take the edge off! Or, maybe we can get a really good group discount on some real estate on an island in the southern Caribbean!

As always, great advice and terrific attitude, not to mention the subtle humor. A smile goes a long way in lightening not only your heart, but everyone you meet! By the way, I’m all for finding that island in the Carribean!

Thanks for following through with your catchy blog title. ;) You are doing an awesome job, Bob–we were all impressed with your Arc Trainer moxie on Saturday!!! You were cruisin’! You’ll be amazed with how caught up you still are w/ your cardio when it comes time to run again!
