A cold,wet and icy weekend
Posted by Terrence York under: Terrence York (Coach) .
Saturday morning Coach Mike and myself met in East Grand rapids. We thought about running a 16 mile long run but we were not really prepared for a long run on this nice but very cold morning. I know I didn’t eat right the night before for a long run and I knew I could do a 4 mile run without any complications. It took me a long time to warm up that morning. We crossed paths with a couple of runners we knew and they were covered in frost from head to toe. It was only 8 degrees. After we finished we headed to Kava coffee house and waited for fellow run gazelle members to join us after they did their long run. I always enjoy a nice cup of joe after a run and not to mention the great conversations.
Later that day my family and I decided to go to the mall and who did we see skateboarding with his son? If you thought it was Tony Hawk you were close, it was Coach Mike D. He looked like he was doing great. About an hour after we left I get a phone call from Tony Hawk I mean Mike D that he had broke his wrist from skate boarding. I was like that bites DUDE. Hopefully this won’t effect his training.
While I was backing out my driveway on Sunday morning which had about 5 inches of ice on it and 3 inches of water from all the rain we had I pulled back up to my garage and called Tony Hawk (Mike D) and we both decided to run our long run of 16 miles on the track inside the YMCA and didn’t want to risk injury or in Mikes case a worse injury. It was a long and very hard training run going aroung in a circle 112 times. Other run gazelle members had joined us in running inside after they did a 6 mile run outside. I am so gratefull that we have another option for a long run when the weather is bad outside but I don’t know if I want to endure running around in a circle for more than ten miles again. It was one of the hardest long runs that I have ever ran. Hats off to Mike for training with a broken wrist and everyone else training in these brutal winter conditions.

Sorry I missed you guys on Saturday morning! And HUGE kudos to you for doing 112 laps!!! I’ve done 11 miles on a treadmill before–but at least there I don’t get dizzy!
You’re doing an awesome job, Coach!

112 laps?! Do you have one leg that is shorter or stronger than the other? That’s pretty amazing!
